There's no doubt that energy efficiency is important to the environment and to you. Reducing your carbon footprint – and your costs – is essential.
As lighting is a major use of energy in most buildings, efficiency improvements will go a long way to ensuring a better future for all.Take a look at the following examples to see how you could generate the savings in your building.
Retail
A typical retail environment of 350 sq m, with 84 luminaires operating for an average of 70 hours a week.
A standard 2x26W compact fluorescent luminaire would use 17,428 Kwh per year. Using the axent RXD1, the annual consumption is 7,644 Kwh.
The annual saving amounts to 9,784 Kwh
Hospitality
A standard 1x32W compact fluorescent luminaire would use 9,784 Kwh per year. Using the axent RXD2, the annual consumption is 4,193 Kwh.
The annual saving amounts to 5,591 Kwh
Education
A typical school or college, at 1,600 sq m, operating 400 luminaires for 55 hours a week.
Traditionally, using 2x26W CFL, the annual Kwh consumption is 65,208. Using RXD1, the annual Kwh stands at 28,600 - saving 36,608 Kwh per year
Healthcare
In a healthcare setting of 400 sq m, 90 luminaires could be in use for 65 hours a week.
With 2x18W CFL downlights this amounts to an annual Kwh of 11,864. Using RXD2 on the other hand leads to total Kwh of 4,563 - a saving of 7,301 Kwh
Reducing carbon footprints
The UK Government, through its Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has introduced a number of measures in its bid to reach the targets laid down in the Kyoto Protocol in 1997. One of the keys to this is DEFRA’s Climate Change protocol which sets out the Government’s priorities.
As lighting accounts for some 20 per cent of UK electricity use, we can all be doing something to help reach those targets.

SMEs, according to the Government, account for approximately 40 per cent of the country’s energy use but owners and managers have little time or budget to spend on energy-saving projects. That’s where the Carbon Trust comes in.
The trust offers a range of products and services, such as interest-free loans and subsidies to help turn the opportunities for energy saving into real-life reductions in energy consumption.
